The Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA) has condemned the Malaysian government for its heavy-handed reaction to the BERSIH 3.0 rally

“Time and again, the Malaysian government has demonstrated its total disregard for international human rights standards on peaceful assemblies. FORUM-ASIA also slammed the government for shirking its responsibility over the violence that occurred at the rally. “It is wholly irresponsible for the Prime Minister to claim that the police was victimised by the protestors and was thus prompted to act”

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak appeared on Monday to have weathered the weekend’s violent electoral reform protest and may still call elections as early as June.

No man can be trusted with unchecked power

In the end of Bersih 3.0 showed that the line between good and evil runs not across party lines or those for/against a cause. The writer C.S. Lewis said that democracy was necessary because “no man can be trusted with unchecked power over his fellows”.

Displaying bruises and scrapes, participants in a weekend protest said Sunday that the police used brutal tactics to shut down their rally for fair elections

There were over 150,000 members of the public who wanted to be at the field which happened to be empty at that time.

The police say they were protecting public interest. What public interest existed at 2pm April 28, 2012? Who were the members of the public the police are referring to? They knew that the organisers would not be able to control the angry crowds once it was sent helter-skelter by the tear gas and water-cannons

For a nation that has been prominently divided according to race for more than 50 years, the demographics and turnout of the rally has set new benchmarks for the country’s political landscape.

Yet, it is likely that Najib and his administration is unperturbed by the massive rally, as it does not view the rally as a game-changer in the upcoming elections. …….At least, not yet.

In the aftermath of BERSIH 3.0, however you look at it, the police and the government must take full responsibility on whatever damage that happened.

Why were they so trigger-happy and straight away shot tear gas into the crowd?

Worse, if there had been a stampede, people could have died. And why did the police shoot tear gas from the non-barricaded areas in Jalan Pudu and Petaling Street as well?
