Al Jazeera in response to Astro censorship of its news: “Our news report was a factual account of events that day, and intrusion in our editorial process is unwarranted. We have not been censored in this way by another distribution platform anywhere in the world.”

In a terse demand note to Astro, BBC “strongly” condemned “any blocking of the trusted news that we broadcast around the world including via distribution partners”.

Astro, meanwhile, simply said they had to “comply with local content regulations”

Minister Rais Yatim defended Astro’s right, saying it was the satellite television’s prerogative to air the “best parts”

He said the Bar’s interim report on the Bersih 3.0 rally had found that:

1. The rally was peaceful until around 3pm when the police unleashed water cannon and tear gas on the crowd;

2. The use of force by the police without any obvious provocation or cause, was far worse, indiscriminate, disproportionate and excessive;

3. Police brutality was more widespread;

4. There was a concerted effort by the police to prevent and stop any recording of their actions and conduct;

5. Police fired tear gas directly at the crowd and their firing pattern was to box in the participants rather than allow them to disperse quickly

6. After which pockets of retaliatory behaviour was exhibited by some participants of the rally to the wrongful use of force by the police;

7. The police were observed taunting and mocking the crowd;

8. When items were thrown by some of the participants at the police, the police stooped to return like for like; and

9. Not all police personnel were wearing and displaying their police identification number on their uniforms.

Mobile phones jammed & No exits Out

I saw some police personnel in a truck placing on the lamp posts, what I later learned were possibly the radio jammers used to block mobile phones and Internet access during the rally.

There was no way we could have left the area. The trains were not running, and we could see the water cannons targeting the very places where people had been trapped. The police gave no quarter, and if the people had to fight back, then it is because they had no place to escape.

Mr Prime Minister, really it was through Bersih 3.0 we truly experienced, and saw your 1 Malaysia in practice.

We met with Malaysians, from Pahang, Kelantan, Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya and as far as East Malaysia. These Malaysians were Malay, Indian, Chinese and others.  These Malaysians were young and old, male and female or any other.   These Malaysians were college students, lecturers, working professionals, business men, lawyers, housewives, NGOs, retirees, truly everyone who was anyone was represented here.

Psychological Warfare Tactics Used

Clear strategy was in place to create confusion (police retreating from barrier … giving false sense of passive permission for crowd to continue breaching barrier) –> chaos (shots directly fired into the masses beyond the barrier) so as to create panic and as much harm as possible. The step-by-step execution of this deliberate plan where there was clearly disregard for human life and casualties. Only people higher up could have approved of such a plan. Who?

Heroes And More Heroes

But amidst the canned-sardine situation, the searing pain on our cheeks, eyes and throat, the tears and the mucus, an aged man urged my crying friend to keep calm and gave her a mask. My friend gave the mask to a girl who didn’t have a towel. People were passing water around and offering each other salt. My friend fell and people picked her up. Some people braved the tear gas and rushed to form a circle around a fallen person instead of stampeding over her, and they later carried her to safety.

http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/nation/2012/05/01/bright-and-yellow-dawn-dark-and-stormy-dusk/

Immediately after the first round of tear gas, we saw a girl walking around picking up rubbish. We asked her for some bags, which we later used to pick up rubbish as well.

Down the road, we saw many policemen ambushing a man and punching him together, kicking him when he fell. They also roughly grabbed other men down the road. They were forcibly making people remove their yellow T-shirts and arresting them.

My friend and another girl started scolding the police for hitting a man until he bled although he was already shirtless. The police just yelled at us to go home. Any male person spotted was treated with much more force and aggression.

We saw all these and we couldn’t document anything. The police were acting like gangsters, ganging up and beating up single men, forcing them to strip.

Horror stories of police aggression

News as of 30 April 2012

The Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA) has condemned the Malaysian government for its heavy-handed reaction to the BERSIH 3.0 rally

“Time and again, the Malaysian government has demonstrated its total disregard for international human rights standards on peaceful assemblies. FORUM-ASIA also slammed the government for shirking its responsibility over the violence that occurred at the rally. “It is wholly irresponsible for the Prime Minister to claim that the police was victimised by the protestors and was thus prompted to act”

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak appeared on Monday to have weathered the weekend’s violent electoral reform protest and may still call elections as early as June.

No man can be trusted with unchecked power

In the end of Bersih 3.0 showed that the line between good and evil runs not across party lines or those for/against a cause. The writer C.S. Lewis said that democracy was necessary because “no man can be trusted with unchecked power over his fellows”.

There were over 150,000 members of the public who wanted to be at the field which happened to be empty at that time.

The police say they were protecting public interest. What public interest existed at 2pm April 28, 2012? Who were the members of the public the police are referring to? They knew that the organisers would not be able to control the angry crowds once it was sent helter-skelter by the tear gas and water-cannons

For a nation that has been prominently divided according to race for more than 50 years, the demographics and turnout of the rally has set new benchmarks for the country’s political landscape.

Yet, it is likely that Najib and his administration is unperturbed by the massive rally, as it does not view the rally as a game-changer in the upcoming elections. …….At least, not yet.
